In America we live unhealthy lifestyles. We live unhealthy lifestyles because we are lazy. We also tend to over eat at every meal of the day. Lastly we have an unhealthy lifestyle because we incorporate a little physical activity into our daily lifestyles. We can solve these problems by exercising and having a more balanced diet.

The definition of lazy is to be reluctant to work or exert one self. We have become lazy because we have a lot of distraction such as video games, television, and movies. We live in a fast pace society so we like to get to places fast. Instead of taking the stairs we use the elevator, or instead of walking to school or work that is nearby, we drive. We chose not to exercise because we are lazy, we don’t want to exert ourselves with physical activity even when we have the free time. We would rather play video games or watch a movie as a leisure activity rather, than going out to play a basketball game.

Americans over eat a lot, but it’s not the amount of food intake but the number of calories. The number one problem in the American diet is too many calories. A factor that goes into this excess amount of calories is the empty calories such as sweets and sodas which provide little to no nutritional value. According to livestrong.com an average American teenager drinks about 20 ounces of soda every day. About 30% of the calorie intake in our diets is junk foods. We also eat a lot of fast food because we want our food on the go or have no time for home cooked meals. Fast food restaurants increased their portion sizes, according to the Sacramento Bee when McDonald’s introduce the large fries it was 3.5 ounce which is equal to the medium size fries today. It is recorded that kids, between the ages 6-14, eat fast food 157,000 times a month.

We don’t like to play outside anymore. We would rather watch a movie then go outside to play some type of sport. Many factors can come into play. One factor is that parents don’t allow their children to go out to play or go to the park, because of the increase of violence in communities. In communities where violence happens, parents and children don’t go out or use public parks because they fear being harmed. Also we have technology that distract us. We don’t have to go outside to have fun when we can play our Xbox 360 or PS3 Studies show that 91% of children between the ages of 12-17 play video games. This is an 9% increase from 2009 to 2011. Also 97% of teens between the ages of 12-17 play computer, web, portable, or console games. This increase of video game playing has decreased the desire to go out to play.

In conclusion we live unhealthy lifestyles. If we don’t change our lifestyles now, we could soon find ourselves a victim of the number one killer in America, heart disease. With the number of calories growing obesity has dramatically increased. These could have easily been prevented if we had a healthy balanced diet.
